How to learn effectively with an AI assistant

AI is most useful when it helps you understand and practice a topic rather than replacing the work you are trying to learn.

Use AI as a tutor

Ask for an explanation at your level, one example and one counterexample. Ask why an answer works, not only for the answer.

Ask for guided practice

Request a problem without the solution first. Attempt it yourself, then ask the assistant to review your work and identify the first incorrect assumption.

Provide context

Useful context includes your goal, level, relevant code or data, constraints, what you tried and the expected output.

Verify important claims

AI can produce confident but incorrect statements. For current facts, check primary sources. For code, run it. For important calculations, recompute independently.

Keep a learning record

After solving a problem, write the lesson in your own words and record the mistake, evidence and rule you learned.

A five-part prompt pattern

  1. Goal
  2. Context
  3. Constraints
  4. Output format
  5. Verification requirements
